Kolkata: The preliminary report of the high-power committee headed by Chief Secretary Malay De in connection with the Majerhat bridge caving-in incident will be submitted to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday. The state government had constituted the committee to probe the incident and ascertain the exact reason behind the same. The committee comprising top officials of departments including the state Irrigation department, the state Public Works Department, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs department, the Public Health Engineering department and senior police officers held their first meeting on September 7 and its report was scheduled to be submitted within seven days.According to sources, the Chief Secretary is going to submit the preliminary report to the Chief Minister on Friday. It may be mentioned that the final report in this connection that will contain the “detailed” technical explanation leading to the caving-in of the bridge will take some more time to get ready.Three probable reasons have come up as the main cause behind the caving-in of the bridge. The issue of “heavy vibration due to the Metro work that was going on just adjacent to the caved-in portion of the bridge” has come up as a “strong reason.” Though the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) had claimed that “there was no relation with the Metro work and the collapse of the bridge”, a question was raised as to how could the authority come to a conclusion so fast within such a short span of time without any inquiry. It may be mentioned that the vibration issue had also come up in the first meeting of the committee.Besides, the issue related to the vibration caused by the Metro work; the matter of timely repair work of the bridge has also been discussed as a potent reason behind the incident that could also probably get reflected in the preliminary report. Moreover, the matter of heavy load on the upper surface of the bridge has been attributed as another reason as the road was repaired without removing the previously existing tar surface of the bridge. At the same time, the state Public Works Department (PWD) is taking all necessary steps to complete construction of the alternate road at the earliest. There will be a discussion with Railway authorities and the Chief Secretary in connection with setting up of a level-crossing near the railway tracks at Majerhat which is required for the alternate road. The Railway authorities have brought to the notice of the PWD engineers that many goods trains pass through Majerhat and further discussion is needed in connection with construction of the alternate pathway.
