first_imgJanuary 23, 2020 /Sports News – Local Utah State Men’s Basketball Hosts Colorado State Saturday Written by FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailLOGAN, Utah-Saturday, Utah State men’s basketball (15-6, 4-4 in Mountain West Conference play) hosts Colorado State (14-7, 5-3 in Mountain West play) as they seek to get back in the conference race.The Aggies find themselves in seventh place in the Mountain West standings and need a win against the Rams, who are currently in fifth place in the conference, to keep their heads above water.Despite the hard times Utah State has met this season, they are still among the nation’s statistical leaders in various categories.The Aggies have currently made 364 free throws, ranking them second nationally.Utah State ranks fourth nationally in total rebounds (869), seventh in total assists (346) and ninth nationally in defensive rebounds per game (29.76 rebounds per game).The Aggies are coached by Craig Smith (43-13, .768 at Utah State; 122-68, .642 as a collegiate head coach) who is in his second season at the helm of the Utah State program.The Aggies score 78.2 points per game, ranking Utah State 34th nationally in scoring offense.Senior guard Sam Merrill (17.5 points per game) is the Aggies’ leading scorer on the season.Sophomore forward Justin Bean (13.2 points per game, a team-best 10.4 rebounds per game; his 219 rebounds are ninth nationally, a team-best 21 blocked shots).Sophomore center, Portuguese national Neemias Queta (11.6 points, 5.8 rebounds per game) also scores in double figures on-average for Utah State.Queta’s fellow Portuguese national, senior guard Diogo Brito leads the Aggies with 37 steals and junior guard Abel Porter leads the squad with 78 assists.Utah State surrenders  64.7 points per game, ranking the Aggies 75th nationally in scoring defense.Colorado State is coached by second-year coach Niko Medved who is 26-27 (.491) at the helm of the Rams’ program.Counting stints at Furman and Drake, Medved is 105-115 (.477) as a collegiate head coach.Colorado State scores 75.4 points per game as the Rams are tied for 86th nationally in scoring offense with Samford.Freshman guard Isaiah Stevens leads the Rams in scoring (13.3 points per game) and assists (92).Redshirt senior forward/center Nico Carvacho (12 points per game, a team-best 10.5 rebounds per game) and freshman guard/forward David Roddy (12 points, 5.7 rebounds per game, a team-best 14 blocked shots) also score in double figures on-average for Colorado State.Sophomore guard Kendle Moore leads the Rams with 27 steals on the season.Colorado State surrenders 70.3 points per game as the Rams rank 209th nationally in scoring defense.The Aggies lead the Rams 62-39 all-time, including 18-8 at Logan.
