Exclusive – Everton can win the title! Southall says Lukaku can lead Toffees to unlikely triumph

first_imgNeville Southall claims Everton can win the Premier League this season. The Merseyside club are 200/1 with bookmakers to win the title, having finished fifth last term and seen the sides who finished above them all strengthen considerably over the summer. But Southall insists his former club should not be written out of the race for the championship this time around, telling talkSPORT there is no reason why Roberto Martinez can’t lead the Toffees to an unlikely triumph.Speaking ahead of Everton’s clash with Arsenal, the Welshman said: “What really gets on my nerves is everyone is going on about the title being between [the likes of] Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Man United. No, there are a couple of other teams out there that could win the league and we are one of them.“It’s all about them, but we are a good team. We could surprise a few people this season, especially if we can get a few more in. It is not what it used to be any more, it is not a two horse race now.”The likes of Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea may have spent more this summer, but Everton have splashed out a large amount of money themselves, largely on Romelu Lukaku, with the striker arriving from Chelsea for a club record fee of £28million.The young Belgian enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Goodison Park last season, but Southall believes he is far from the finished product and claims the Toffees’ hopes of a successful campaign could depend on whether the 21-year-old makes the necessary improvements to his game.“Lukaku needs to come on and he needs to show he has learnt more than last year,” added Southall, speaking on The Sports Bar.“He is great at scoring goals but his all-round play has to improve. His hold up play certainly needs to improve.“He could be a little Drogba, he could flatten people for fun, but he seems to be a little intimidated about using his power. If he can bully people and hold the ball up, we will do really well this year. “Everton v Arsenal is live on talkSPORT on Saturday 23 August 2014, kick off 17:30last_img
