Brendan Rodgers joins talkSPORT to reflect on losing first game as Celtic boss

first_imgBrendan Rodgers is confident his Celtic team will make amends for losing his first game in charge against semi-pro side Lincoln Red Imps by thrashing them at home. The Bhoys were beaten 1-0 by the champions of Gibraltar in their Champions League qualifying tie on Tuesday – a result many are branding one of the worst in the club’s history.Striker Lee Casciaro, who had scored Gibraltar’s first international goal against Scotland at Hampden Park in 2015, sensationally put the part-timers ahead in the 47th minute, while the Hoops missed a series of chances on the Victoria Stadium’s astro-turf pitch. The teams will meet again in the second leg at Celtic Park next Wednesday, and Rodgers believes his new-look side will put the shock result behind them with a convincing display at home. However, the former Liverpool boss admits it could be disastrous if they suffer elimination at the hands of the minnows. When asked what went wrong for the Hoops, Rodgers told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “It was a mixture of a few things, really. We were playing on an astro-turf pitch, which wasn’t ideal, and it was up to the mid-30’s in temperature.“And it wasn’t a modern turf pitch, either, it was a very dated and old school one.“But still, we dominated the game, we failed to our chances and obviously they had one clearance up the pitch that bounced awkwardly and the guy goes in and scores.“But give credit to them, they played with five at the back made it very difficult for us, and we couldn’t break them down. Then when we did, we hit the crossbar four times and their keeper made some great saves. Sometimes that happens in football.“It’s obviously disappointing but I think over the course of these qualifying rounds the second legs for us at Parkhead were always going to be very important.“It will be a totally different game at home.  “The team has been training really well. They’ve only been back at training for about 20 days and these games come very quickly for us. They’re a great bunch of boys who will be hurting this morning.“I’m sure the result last night would have disappointed the fans, but this is a process for us, it’s going to take time to mould this team.“But we’ll be even more disappointed if we don’t get the right result next week.”last_img
